Stéphanie Thurber began her career in business law and quickly developed an interest in intellectual property and technology fields that fuel her curiosity for innovation, align with her artistic interests, and satisfy her desire for discovery.
On a daily basis, she develops strategies to protect copyrights, trademarks, industrial designs, trade secrets, and domain names both in Canada and internationally. She assists clients in establishing governance policies for the protection of personal data and privacy, ensuring compliance with provincial and federal laws. Ms. Thurber drafts and reviews agreements for the communication and processing of personal data between parties from various countries.
She is well-versed in technology transactions, including SAAS agreements, technology transfers, service contracts, distribution agreements, and related agreements such as confidentiality and non-competition clauses. Her expertise extends to traditional and e-commerce businesses, IT, publishing, the cultural and entertainment industries, manufacturing, product distribution, and franchises.
Some of Ms. Thurber’s notable assignments include preparing legal proceedings and representing clients before the Federal Court and Federal Court of Appeal in a trademark dispute between bleach manufacturers, drafting terms of use for IoT-based products that collect physical performance data, developing an intellectual property protection strategy across more than 40 countries, advising on the application of Quebec’s Charter of the French Language for foreign businesses establishing in Quebec, conducting due diligence on IP portfolios and personal data protection for mergers and acquisitions, and drafting collaboration agreements between private businesses and university research centers.
Ms. Thurber holds a law degree from the Université de Sherbrooke and a master’s degree in IT law from the Université de Montréal. Committed to social causes, she serves on the board of directors for Se Reconstruire, a breast health center helping women rebuild and move forward with a renewed self-image after being affected by cancer.
